You've probably never stopped to think about the origins of many of the things we use every day. However, sometimes curiosity leads us to wonder where they come from. Today, we bring you a little lesson on the history of girdles and how they came to be what they are today.
Girdles, like many of the garments we wear today, have a long and fascinating history. According to some research, they have been around since 1700 BC, although at that time they were not known as "girdles" but as "corsets". The ancient civilizations of Mycenae and Crete used these garments made of wool and leather, and were stiffened in various ways. Yes, just imagine! Thousands of years ago people were already thinking about how to stylize their figure.

Back then, girdles were not what we know them as today. What you didn't know about girdles is that, much later, in the 16th century, they began to become popular in Italy, at the Medici court in Florence. This influential Renaissance family made the corset a fashionable item, although, in this case, it was made of metal! Yes, as you read, metal. Its purpose was to stylize the woman's figure, making her look very narrow-waisted and enlarging the bust and hips. But, of course, it wasn't the most comfortable. It's not easy to move around in a metal corset!
As time went by, corsets evolved. Metal was no longer necessary and, what you didn't know about girdles, was that they started to be more comfortable, with different materials and shapes. They even became part of everyday fashion, with young women wearing them from the age of 13 well into adulthood. These corsets were adapted to the dresses of the time and were created in a wide variety of colors and designs.

Just like in those days, body shaping and weight loss girdles still have the main objective of slimming the figure, but today they are much more comfortable and safe. Although in the past the corset had a more exaggerated and restrictive approach, today girdles allow us to look slimmer quickly and easily, while maintaining the comfort we need in our daily lives.

As you can see, the history of girdles is very old and has always revolved around the same idea: to shape the body. Although their materials and designs have changed, their purpose has not changed much over the centuries. Who would have thought that today's modern girdles have such a fascinating history!
